Will you open the door to opportunity for the next generation?
For some people, going to university has always been the expected next step. But for many talented young people today, it still feels like stepping into a world that was never designed for them.
Across the UK, students from disadvantaged backgrounds are still underrepresented at university – not because they lack ability, but because financial pressure and a lack of support stand in their way. And with the average cost of living now reaching at least £12,500 a year, many students are feeling that pressure more than ever.
At Manchester, we believe talent should determine a student’s future – not their background or income.
Will you accept the challenge and open the door to opportunity for the next generation? With a gift today, you’ll remove the barriers that stand between talented students and a brighter future.
Emma's story: From potential to possibility
Emma grew up less than an hour from campus. She had a natural talent for maths, but university didn’t feel like somewhere she belonged. No one in her family had been, and it felt like something for other people.
Everything changed when she joined the donor-funded Manchester Access Programme (MAP). Through MAP, Emma experienced university life, built her confidence, and began to imagine a future she had never believed was possible.
But when she started thinking about the cost of university life, it quickly became overwhelming – and for a while, she wasn’t sure it was something she could afford.
Thanks to donor support, Emma received the financial help that changed everything.
Instead of constant worry, she could focus on her studies. And instead of struggling to get by, she could fully take part in university life.
Today, she is thriving – achieving top grades, gaining experience abroad, and preparing to lead the Aerospace Society.
But Emma’s story is not unique.
Right now, there are more students just like her preparing to arrive at Manchester – full of potential, but already worrying about how they will afford to stay.
“Your gift today will make sure that students like me can build the skills and confidence they need to pursue a Manchester education and have the support to thrive throughout our studies. Thank you for backing the next generation.”
